1) Created a citizen's initiate page and added "Edge Struthers" as an initiative. You can express your interest by clicking the "I want to volunteer" button.
2) Created a project where you can submit your feedback to increase connectivity and mobility in Struthers. See "Submit your feedback for a walkable, bikeable Struthers". You can tag specific locations that need attention and use the tagging system to identify the issue/need. Seeing the data in this format will help us create an action plan to address the mobility issues in Struthers.

Ok, I am just throwing this out there. I would love to simply see the sidewalks and curbs just edged square, the sidewalks swept and weeds cut out and the devil’s strip mowed. By doing just this manual project, it would go a long way on creating pride in our community. In my opinion, this ‘small’ detail (but large project, yes I know) would be an amazing change. It could be done similar to the “adopt a mile” project you see in several communities. And by the way, given the permission, I am more than willing to volunteer to put this project together and to adopt more than one mile. 😊

Thank you for your idea, Jan. You are absolutely right! Involving the community in this beautification project is a great way to promote a sense of community pride, and using the "adopt a mile" concept is a very reasonable way to keep this project manageable.
We love to see citizen initiative! Please let us know how we could help facilitate this. Perhaps we can create a new project page on this site where people could volunteer for newly organized initiatives, groups, events, and activities that arise from this plan. Would that be helpful?

A short description of the project would be this:
EDGE Struthers:
By simply cutting straight edges on both sides of the sidewalk, clearing weeds and grass from the expansion joints, mowing the devil’s strip, edging the curb and clearing the street edge of the curb of weeds and debris, this project will improve the aesthetics of the city and give a comprehensive overview of where the greatest need of sidewalk replacement is. This project can be done by individuals and/or groups on a volunteer basis.

would more so start a neighborhood group on facebook where you’re having these problems . homeowners are responsible for maintaining sidewalks in snowy conditions and devil strips with high grass and weeds. and edging of sidewalks. as far as tree roots go that’s iffy if the tree is on your property that caused the damage. check for grants for tree removal with the tree committee . chapter 521 of our codified ordnances explains it all it depth. it will save you manual labor. and might help you reach out to neighboring people who do not know they’re required to maintain that property. there’s ways to obtain help through the city listed in that section but like any service fees might be applicable .

@Emma Rauzan Thank you Emma for the good information. I was pretty sure that property owners were responsible for the sidewalk maintenance. That being said, it would be a neighbourly action to help out those who can’t maintain the walks. And of course improve the aesthetics of the city.
This is why I think an “adopt a mile” type program would be beneficial to our city. Those of us who enjoy this type of work and have the time, can come together and help others.

@Emma Rauzan Interesting. I assumed it was only the property owner’s responsibility to keep a clear path on the sidewalk. I did not realize it was their responsibility to replace or fix damaged or degrade sidewalks. I find it odd that the city has allowed owners to get away with ripping the sidewalk out completely(West Lewis), allowing it to return to the earth(Narissa), or be heaped up by trees (Center & East ParkCliffe). Even odder the city replaced sidewalk in front of my own house in 2018 that had no issue.

I would say let’s first focus on getting level sidewalks. Have you been down Center St? Parts of the sidewalk rise over a foot because of tree roots. The city’s response was simply to spray paint the sections yellow. If your in a wheel chair, using a walking, pushing a stroller, or running, the sidewalks in Nebo are a joke.

@Sara Williams Hi Sara, I agree that the sidewalks need to be repaired. Is this the city’s responsibility or the property owner’s responsibility? I am not sure, different cities have different ordinances. Anyway, getting them edged and the weeds cleaned out of the expansion joints will go a long way in helping them from getting any worse and also will ‘highlight’ where the uneven paths are. Edging and cleaning them up is the first step as an assessment and an encouragement to whomever has the responsibility for repair.

@Sara Williams Thank you for your feedback, Sara! Many of the City's sidewalks are in great disrepair and this is definitely an access and mobility issue as you say.
Edging and repairing the sidewalks are different projects that can work wonderfully in tandem. Would it would be helpful to put up a map so that residents can enter location-based data about sidewalk obstructions?
