First Saturdays

First Saturdays would be an event for the first saturday of every month. Each month would have a different theme, such as spring garden for the month of April. You could have local businesses/groups sponsor mini floral floats that are placed outside of local businesses. It would promote people to get out a walk around the city to see the mini floats. You can also do scavenger hunts, special cocktails or menus surrounding the theme. The events would be family friendly (minus the cocktails obviously). You could also have local artists, for instance someone playing guitar from a local band to provide entertainment along the way.

Canton does First Fridays and all of the downtown business are open and packed. They recently built a beautiful amphitheater with a giant screen for community events. Vendors line the streets of all kinds and it is a lot of fun. Music playing, and sales from fresh flowers to variety of foods clothes and much more make it enjoyable. Might be a place to contact for some information for some do’s and don’ts they have found over the years.

@Holly Miller they do one in Maryland and it is wildly popular! If this was a popular idea, I was going to get whom ever is in charge the contact info for the people who put on the one in MD. If Canton does one and it is successful, I'd say we start there!

@Sarah Klim Canton has done it for a couple years. My oldest daughter lives downtown and can see everything from her loft. Amazing to see the sea of people through the entire downtown area.

First Saturdays could include Art in the Park. The schools could have the students submit their artwork.

As most of my family still lives in Struthers, and I make frequent trips back, I have a unique perspective in that I see the potential of the community and its willingness to make it awesome! If I could move back and start a business I would and I would absolutely LOVE to do some of these events. I've been to multiple other areas and seen how successful they are, and most are small towns. I am more than willing to be a consultant and give ideas, but due to my distance right now, it would be difficult for me to organize.
