Skatepark

From "Share your ideas about what would make Struthers a great place to live!"

Go to the project

My kids have been really into bmx, scooters, and skateboarding. There used to be a small park by the courthouse but they got rid of it. Kids aren’t supposed to ride in the parking lots around town. I think it would be a great idea to bring back a skatepark to Struthers. It’s a great activity to keep the kids active! I’m sure volunteers would help with the project…my husband included.

It is a great thing for the kids who can utilize it appropriately. The previous site became an issue with profanity and bad behaviors and then younger kids and parents didn’t want to be there. Would need an idea to prevent this being the same issue.

@Holly Miller Thank you for your feedback, Holly! This is valuable information in planning for the future. Where was the previous skate park located?

@Samantha Yannucci it was down near the administration building. I believe there is a salt dome there now? But I could be wrong on what that is. People across the street were very unhappy with the situation.

Thank you for your idea, Colleen! A skate park is a great public space that also has a meaningful function in the social context. That is the intentional creation of space for boys and young men to hang out with their friends and engage in a fun sport, with little barriers to access. Do you have any particular locations in mind?

It likely comes down to available space and proximity to residences. A lot of cities and towns found this out in their own experimentation with skate parks 10 to 15 years ago. It's difficult to find the perfect spot for these parks.
