Wetmore pedestrian rights-of-way

From "Submit your feedback for a walkable, bikeable Struthers"

Go to the project

Wetmore should primarily be further integrated as a part of Yellow Creek Park by creating protected pedestrian crossings across it. Right now, the closest official crossings are at Center St and Poland Ave. In a perfect world, everyone drives the speed limit and keeps an eye out for people crossing, but in reality, many people do not always do so, especially because this road occasionally receives heavy traffic from out-of-towners arriving to the high school via Clingan/Struthers Rd. I have attached my ideas for where it might be useful to place these. I think at least one of these should be a sidewalk-level crossing, which I have seen used in Pittsburgh to great effect. It would both make crossing more accessible for people who would have trouble stepping down off the curb, and would act as a speed bump to make it clear that pedestrians have precedence in this area. Ample signing indicating these rights-of-way would be preferable over signals, I think, because it would force drivers to be more careful when driving through this area at all times, which may also help prevent deer accidents, and it would make it safer for bicyclists (god bless them) to travel in the main traffic lanes, given that this road seems too narrow for bike lanes.
