Youth and Elderly

Our community has so many amazing people. I would like to see more community events where our youth and elderly can make a connection. Many elderly people have no family and very little exposure to our youth. Many of our youth need guidance from our elderly. Our kids love service and we have excellent leadership in our schools that support events for elderly. Although the pandemic makes if difficult to have public events, I am hopeful that we can get back to a time where we can involve our elderly to experience the wonder of our children. I envision providing transportation for our elderly to attend a Christmas party for our children where they can pass out cookies and candy to the kids. A game night with various board games to play with the youth, or a community birthday party where you can sit at a table of your birth month and meet complete strangers to enjoy cake and birthday bingo. Our kids work very hard at sporting events, choral/band concerts, drama club performances and I think our elderly would really enjoy these events, but most will not travel at night. If we had transportation for them, the school already provides discounted tickets prices for them. I would love to see our youth coordinate efforts to provide leaf clean up, snow removal and grass cutting for our elderly. I would love to see our council members create focus groups in each ward involving elderly and youth to provide ideas and problem solve together. If our youth recognized their elderly neighbors by name and vice versa, it would provide a stronger sense of community and connection.
