Youth and Elderly

From "Share your ideas about what would make Struthers a great place to live!"

Go to the project

Our community has so many amazing people. I would like to see more community events where our youth and elderly can make a connection. Many elderly people have no family and very little exposure to our youth. Many of our youth need guidance from our elderly. Our kids love service and we have excellent leadership in our schools that support events for elderly. Although the pandemic makes if difficult to have public events, I am hopeful that we can get back to a time where we can involve our elderly to experience the wonder of our children. I envision providing transportation for our elderly to attend a Christmas party for our children where they can pass out cookies and candy to the kids. A game night with various board games to play with the youth, or a community birthday party where you can sit at a table of your birth month and meet complete strangers to enjoy cake and birthday bingo. Our kids work very hard at sporting events, choral/band concerts, drama club performances and I think our elderly would really enjoy these events, but most will not travel at night. If we had transportation for them, the school already provides discounted tickets prices for them. I would love to see our youth coordinate efforts to provide leaf clean up, snow removal and grass cutting for our elderly. I would love to see our council members create focus groups in each ward involving elderly and youth to provide ideas and problem solve together. If our youth recognized their elderly neighbors by name and vice versa, it would provide a stronger sense of community and connection.

Hi Sheri! I was just speaking with Megan Pingley about having a senior center type place! Somewhere that could serve affordable lunches and early dinners for those on a fixed income and for those who may be widowed. Our middle school and high school singers and musicians could perform during holidays. New Lease could have puppies visit. All kinds of ideas!

@Brandy Brabant Eisenbraun That would be great!! The BOE already hosts a Thanksgiving meal and a summer picnic for the senior citizens where the students help out and perform, but if we could add to it, I know my church would get involved.

@Sheri Noble @Brandy Brabant Eisenbraun Thank you for these great ideas! Sheri, that would be great, and may even be a great idea over the next few weeks as we plan events/activities to engage the seniors in this ideation process. Is this something your church may like to help out with? I'll be sending a message to those who have volunteered on the engagement committees by Monday.

@Samantha Yannucci I will have to contact the Trustees for facility use, but I am sure it will not be a problem.

@Sheri Noble Thanks, Sheri! Are you interested in joining a planning committee? The basic function of the committees is to get the word out to different stakeholder groups and bring them to the table. I just sent out an email to those who volunteered to join a committee (see the project "Help us get more people involved by joining a planning committee") to solicit help in planning offline engagement events. I noticed your email is not in there, but I think you'd be great. If you have any questions about it, send me an email at samantha@koconsultllc.com
