Vote on Priorities

April 30, 2022 4:00 AM - May 15, 2022 4:00 AM

We hear you, Struthers!

We are so grateful to have received nearly 400 ideas online and in person so far, and several hundred comments, votes, and minutes of discussions around those ideas. We furthermore organized the ideas into themes and categories so that we can get a better understanding of the community’s top priorities.

Here’s what we found:

The community is in dire need of better social infrastructure.

Public space was the most frequently addressed topic in ideas submissions and the top most cited concern, followed by (social inclusion, recreation, and culture, sports and events). The Struthers community wants to live in a city with more things to do, more places to meet up and hang out with friends, family, and neighbors, and more going on, including shopping and recreational opportunities.

Furthermore, we hear you that there is a lack of social inclusion. The community needs more public spaces that respond to the needs of our youth and senior populations – both of which expressed a lack of and need for places to mingle with their peers. Some specifics tools to enhance the social infrastructure that emerged from the ideas:

  • Events and activities: The community wants to see more programmed activities, including cultural and recreational events unique to Struthers.
  • Downtown Revitalization: The community wants a downtown they can be proud of, and the need for revitalization is a community-wide consensus.
  • Business development: Struthers residents want to keep their money in Struthers and show preference for small businesses that are unique to Struthers, such as cafés, breakfast joints, and speciality and hobby stores.

Your next steps

  • Take the quick survey below to identify specific priorities related to housing; economic development; public spaces, facilities, and services; and transportation. It takes about two (2) minutes.
  • Keep it up. We need your voice in all aspects of the plan and must ramp up participation in the mapping activities for transportation and mobility, and in the surveys specific to downtown. The following buttons direct you to current activities, and more activities will be posted throughout the process:

Our next steps

  • We are taking this overarching theme of Social Infrastructure and incorporating it into every layer of the plan. We are dedicated to delivering a plan and recommendations for Struthers with strong social underpinnings; a City that supports, encourages, and enables community members of all ages, races, ethnicities, and abilities to participate in society. After all, it's this concept that societies were built on. (You can learn more about the word itself here for fun.)
  • We will change the status of the ideas as the plan is written, so you can see how your idea was incorporated into the plan.
  • We will continue to post new projects throughout the planning process to get your feedback about the various aspects of the plan (for example, specific to housing, transportation, parks and greenspace, etc.)
  • We are planning more offline engagement activities and events.
